Tara Sloan on a Sunday in Cap Haitien

On Sunday morning January 10th we left Living Hope Mission to go and worship at the church in Fossee Capois(this is the same church college students and adults from TRBC put the roof on for two years ago).  The newly paved road turned to a bumpy dusty road as we left Limonade to get to Fossee Capois, letting us know that we were moving to a more rural area of Northern Haiti.

The church itself is a concrete block structure filled with wooden pews.  It was pleasantly decorated with hanging flowers, weaved straw mats and decorated bonnets.  We sat near the rear of the church because most of the other seats were already filled.  The minute we sat down the children slowly started squeezing between the pews so they could get closer to us and sit with us.  Soon there were children on most of our laps.  They enjoyed hugging us and holding our hands.  Some would sneak up touch us then move away it was strange and wonderful at the same time.

The worship service was beautiful.  They sang songs, had corporate prayer, read Scripture, and all of this was done with great enthusiasm and volume.  Curtis went up and introduced the group, why we were there and thanked them for having us.  Steve gave a short sermon which Wilbert translated.

After the service we walked around to see the school and the well that TRBC helped to put in, the whole time we were surrounded by beuatiful smiling children.  They all wanted their picture take.  It was so cool to watch them light up when they got to see an image of themselves through the LCD viewer.  One little girl raised her hands in the air and began shouting, "that is me!, that is me!" (Steve translated this with his limited knowledge of French and Creole, but he was pretty sure).

We went out to lunch because the kitchen staff gets off on Sundays at the mission.  It was wonderful getting to taste so many different Haitian dishes.  Haitian food is flavorful and very diverse.  We had trouble getting around Cap Haitien because it had rained and flooded much of the roads.  The rains and flooding also caused the trash that normally lies everywhere to pile up which actually blocked one road.

After lunch we returned to the mission enjoying the rest of our sabbath.
