DNOW 2017: Reset

By: Kevin Hall,  March 10, 2017

If you have been around Thomasville Road Baptist Church for any amount of time you have heard the word, DNOW.  If you are new to our church or a guest, you may be wondering what is DNOW?  Also, if you happened to be around on the weekend of DNOW this year, you may have realized it is something for the students, but still don’t know the purpose of DNOW.  Please, let me explain.

DNOW is short for Discipleship Now, and has been around for 40 years across our Convention.  It is a general term for the weekend so that, each year, students and parents will know what to expect.  The theme and some activities for the weekend may change but the structure of staying in homes remains the same.

DNOW is a weekend retreat for students in grades 6th through 12th.  It is filled with plenty of time for a student to spend time with their friends and time with a college leader.  The design of the weekend is simple.  The students stay two nights in designated host homes by grade and by gender.  It becomes a time of learning, serving, and hanging out with your friends.  We typically have a guest speaker who brings the word of God to the students, a guest worship band who leads us in worship and a group of college leaders from around the area to stay in the homes with the students, building relationships, and encouraging them in their walk with Christ.

Our DNOW weekend this year was February 10-12.  The total number of adults, college students, and students who were involved was around 210.  We had additional adults who donated food through our Sunday morning small groups.  We had 15 host homes for students, and over 30 college leaders.   It becomes an all-church event for our student ministry.  As you might guess, it takes a big team of adult volunteers to help make this week happen.  Our leadership admin trio this year, April, Yvonne, and Shelli, did a fantastic job leading our ministry team of volunteers to help make the weekend a huge success.

This theme this year was “RESET”; our focal verse was Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a clean heart, and renew a right spirit in me, Lord.” This is our prayer and challenge for our students this year. May God renew us in His Spirit by creating a clean heart.
