Hope and Healing in Houston

By: Rachel Graham,  September 15, 2017

Pastor Curtis often says that our TRBC church family is the "smartest congregation in Tallahassee." Well, our TRBC church family is also the most generous congregation in Tallahassee. In a very short time, our church gave over $4000 in Home Depot gift cards and cash for our team heading to Houston for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. Our TRBC team partnered with Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston to "mud out" homes affected by the flood waters. Even though our team had to cut their trip short to head back to Florida to prepare for Hurricane Irma, they were able to help 3 families mud out their homes. Some may look at photos of the devastation in Texas and think that wasn't much help. However, to those three families, our team represented God's hope and healing as these families start to rebuild their lives. After the clean up process was complete, the team prayed with each homeowner and then presented each homeowner with a Home Depot gift card for future needs.

Day One, Home One

This home had five feet of water in it. The sheetrock had to be cut to eight feet (Sheetrock comes in four feet sections).

Day One, Home Two

The homeowners J & K were a truckdriver and teacher, respectively. Their home had 3 feet of water in it. A general contractor from Champion Forest Baptist said when teams come in to do mud outs, it typically saves the homeowner $12,000 in materials and labor since they do not have to hire someone to come in and do the mud out.

Day Two, Home Three

This home was in the Bear Creek subdivision of northwest Houston. Because of the release of water in one of the nearby reservoirs, the home had been standing in floodwaters for two weeks. The waters had just receded the previous day so this was the first day the homeowner was able to get back into her home. The home had three feet of standing water for two weeks. This homeowner does not have flood insurance. She was incredibly grateful for our team's help.

Thank you to our team and our church family for being the hands and feet of Jesus to our hurting neighbors.

Many of you have begun asking how you can help serve those who were impacted by Hurricane Irma. Thankfully, it appears that our area and most of our church family members were spared significant damage. However, other parts of the state were not as fortunate. If you would like to support hurricane relief efforts, either for Irma or Harvey, there are several ways you may do so:

1. GIVE: Provide financial support for the North American Mission Board (NAMB) Send Relief Teams. NAMB Send Relief is the third largest relief organization in the U.S. Every penny you give to this organization goes directly to support hurricane relief, with absolutely no administrative costs. There are two ways you can give to NAMB Send Relief:

Pay by check to TRBC, marking "Hurricane Relief" in the memo. Drop the check in the offering plate or by the church office, and we will forward 100% of those funds to NAMB.
Pay online directly to NAMB Send Relief by clicking HERE.

2. SERVE: In addition to giving, we are still in the process of evaluating other ways we can serve our neighbors nearby and beyond, so be on the lookout for other opportunities as those are announced.

Thank you for being a church who loves others well in Jesus' name.
