Ministry Spotlight: A Women’s Pregnancy Center

By: Sherri Daume,  February 10, 2017

For the next few weeks leading up to Serve The City, we will be talking with people involved in various ministries in our communities. Today we hear from Sherri Daume, Director of Client Services at A Women's Pregnancy Center.

Tell us a little more about A Women’s Pregnancy Center (AWPC) and what it does.

We are here to provide support and information to women and men who find themselves in an unplanned pregnancy. Our mission is to equip them with truth so they are thoroughly equipped to make a choice that is healthy for them and healthy for their babies. We also intentionally share the Gospel with each client we serve. WE ALWAYS NEED VOLUNTEERS TO GO THROUGH OUR TRAINING AND BE AVAILABLE TO COUNSELOR CLIENTS.

How did you get involved in this ministry and how are you involved now?

In 1996 I saw an announcement in the church bulletin that A Women’s Pregnancy Center needed help, so I responded. Little did I know how powerful this work was and how God would bless me, as I watched the power of the Gospel rescue children and their parents from abortion.

How have you seen God work in the lives of people through this ministry?

Located next to FSU campus, we reach out to the most abortion vulnerable population in America today--the 18-24 year old woman. We also reach out to the father of the baby to provide them with information and support, because they are 50% of the story of how the pregnancy came to be.

Recently, an older woman said to me “Twenty nine years ago I was a student at FSU. I was 19, in church every Sunday. My boyfriend and I made some mistakes and I found out I was pregnant. I was terrified, confused and could not even process the information. I opened the phone book and saw A Women’s Pregnancy Center. I just as easily could have seen the abortion clinic, but I saw the pregnancy center. I went there and they listened to my fears, cared for me and shared God’s love with me. Their love and encouragement gave me the strength to tell my parents. I had thought about aborting before I went to A Women’s Pregnancy Center. Instead, I chose to have my baby and he is now my amazing, 29-year-old son who loves Jesus and has given me more love than I could ever have imagined that day I went to your Center. You all saved my son’s life.” (Of course, we know Jesus rescued her son, using His followers as His hands and feet.)

We hear these stories ALL THE TIME! They are now the norm. Last year, over 240 babies were rescued from abortion at AWPC. We constantly rejoice at the work of His hands to the praise of the glory of His Son!

What is God teaching you through your involvement at A Women’s Pregnancy Center?

After 18 years of serving Him at the Center, His grace and beauty becomes more real and magnificent! He changes lives with love. He redeems relationships with the Gospel. He trains and corrects with His Word and He truly convicts with His Spirit. We see it happen every day in this ministry. Even when we lose children to abortion, God comforts and spurs us on through the grief to love the mom and dad and be ready to be there for them with the Gospel if they return.

What Bible verses or promises help you as you do this ministry?

Psalms 82:4 - Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. Matthew 7:1, 5 reminds us not to judge. Instead, take the plank out of our own eye and then we will see clearly to remove the speck from our brother’s eyes.  Also, Deuteronomy 30:19 - For I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your children might live!
