Pedaling with Purpose

By: Dawn Gamache,  March 9, 2018

Saturday morning on February 24th was not your typical morning downstairs in the Fellowship Hall at Thomasville Road Baptist Church.  Flywheels were spinning, pedals were moving, the music was pumping and people were sweating and having a good time. Our Health and Wellness ministry worked together with the City of Tallahassee Police Department to host the 2nd annual Spinning for Survivors Spin-a-thon.  This outreach event brought people together throughout the community of Tallahassee to support and appreciate our local law enforcement officers by helping them raise funds for the upcoming Police Unity Tour in May.  Every year, over 2,500 officers bike 200+ miles over a three day period to our nation’s capitol where they attend a memorial service to honor and remember the officers that have died in the line of duty.

The Spin-a-thon lasted for four hours, from 8am-12pm.  Riders signed up for an hour time slot and did their part to keep each of the ten spin bikes pedaling for the duration of the event. Each Spin instructor from our fitness ministry, Redefine Fitness, led the riders through a series of hills and flats at various paces as motivating and encouraging music played. Bravery, Courage, Perseverance, Commitment, Team Work, and Service were all themes that could be heard through the lyrics of the songs. Our police officers work so hard to protect and keep our community safe.  They witness and see heartbreaking events and experience hardships daily. The Spin-a-thon allowed us to take time to show them just how much they are supported, loved and prayed for in our town. Pictures and names of our officers that have lost their lives in the line of duty were seen not only on display boards and tables throughout the fellowship hall, but also on the spin bikes as well. Some riders formed teams to dedicate their ride in their honor, much like officers do when they bike the actual Police Unity Tour.

Alongside the Spin-a-thon, a pancake breakfast was served as well from 7-9 am. Many came out just to eat pancakes, fellowship with each other and encourage our riders to keep going! The Spin-a-thon and pancake breakfast raised $1075.00 dollars for the local Police Unity Tour Chapter. While these funds are greatly appreciated and significant in helping get our officers to the upcoming officer’s memorial service in Washington D.C., there is a much more valuable reward that simply cannot be measured. The comfort, healing, support, love, and encouragement given to the officers and their families through this event will not fade away. Thank you, TRBC family, for supporting ministries and events like this one that allow Christ’s love to shine in Tallahassee and beyond! Whether you helped decorate, move Spin bikes, cook pancakes, serve, ride or clean up, you made a difference in the lives of our police officers through your heart of service and praise to our Lord Jesus Christ.
